Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare but life-threatening condition in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing excessive inflammation that can damage multiple organs. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential to improve survival and reduce complications.

HISTORY / OVERVIEW

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis occurs when immune cells become excessively activated and release large amounts of inflammatory cytokines.

HLH is classified into:

  • Primary (Familial) HLH: An inherited disorder caused by genetic mutations affecting immune cell function, typically presenting in infants or children.

  • Secondary (Acquired) HLH: Triggered by infections, autoimmune diseases, malignancies (particularly certain lymphomas), or other medical conditions.

Treatment focuses on controlling the hyperinflammatory response while treating the underlying cause.

TREATMENT APPROACHES

Immunosuppressive and Immunomodulatory Therapy

  • Corticosteroids to reduce excessive inflammation

  • Chemotherapy-based treatment protocols in appropriate patients
