Square Reader safely and securely accepts chip and PIN cards, contactless cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention and payment dispute management at no extra cost.

Despite the recent changes in the credit card processing industry, Square still includes one free Square Reader for Magstripe with each new account. Two options are currently available: a reader with a Lightning connector for use on iOS/iPadOS devices, and a reader with a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack (which presumably would work on older iPhones or Android devices).

Low-volume, smaller-ticket businesses and those that only occasionally need to accept a credit/debit card payment are less likely to have any issues with the magstripe reader. However, we strongly suggest upgrading to the EMV chip reader to future-proof your payments setup and protect you from fraud. Overall, the free reader and the robust features that Square offers make them an excellent value for lower-volume small businesses.

When businesses are making a decision about whether to use the Square app, the fixed credit card processing fee is a benefit. Square also removes the need for businesses to buy expensive hardware. The Square Reader, which is a small credit card reader, is provided free. The Square Reader can be used to accept credit card payments online or offline and also to send receipts to customers. Businesses do have the choice to buy more hardware, such as the Square Stand, which is a POS for iPads.

An increasing number of customers prefer digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay as a method of payment. Digital payments like these are convenient and add a layer of protection to each transaction. Plus, customers only need to tap their phone to a card reader to complete a purchase.

A mobile credit card reader is a small electronic hardware device that connects to a smartphone or tablet to accept credit and debit card payments. If connected to a mobile POS system, mobile credit card readers do not typically have the ability to track inventory or products, but can serve as a digital receipt printer and tax/tip calculator. Mobile credit card readers can swipe, dip, or tap cards to accept payments. Card reader devices can be purchased with a one-time fee so merchants are only charged a small fee per transaction.

Yes, you can use your phone as a smart card reader if you have an attachable device such as a dongle card reader, USB card reader or Bluetooth card reader. Simply connect wirelessly or plug-and-play using a USB port or lightning connector. You can connect the hardware device to its associated app on your phone to process payments.

If you are a new customer, sign up for a QuickBooks Payments account and order a card reader. Download the GoPayment app and follow the steps to pair the reader with the app. Sign in to the Merchant Service Center to link your bank account.

EMV is the global standard for smart card payments and acceptance devices. It was named after the original developers, Europay, MasterCard and Visa. EMV refers to smart or chip cards that contain an embedded chip or microprocessor, which provides stronger security features and other capabilities that are not possible with traditional magnetic stripe cards.

EMV provides merchants with increased fraud protection from counterfeit, lost or stolen cards, because the embedded chip is more secure than the traditional magnetic stripe technology. The chip in EMV enabled cards generates a unique one-time code that cannot be replicated by counterfeit cards. EMV has already been adopted in many countries, and the United States transitioned to EMV chip cards in October 2015. That means that if you swipe a fraudulent EMV/chip card with a magnetic stripe reader today, you could be liable for that charge.

Chip & PIN and Chip & Signature are two types of chip cards in the market. Chip & PIN requires a PIN to complete the transaction and any data stolen from the merchant is useless because the transaction data expires after it leaves the Chip & PIN reader. Chip & Signature requires a customer signature to complete the transaction. In the US, most card companies are only offering Chip & Signature. Chip cards also have the same magnetic stripes as non-chip cards and may be used in the traditional methods of swipe or key entry, but these transactions will not have the additional security protections provided through EMV chip readers.

Starting August 15, 2016, if you process a counterfeit or stolen EMV chip card using a magnetic swipe reader using the GoPayment app, online Merchant Service Center or QuickBooks Point of Sale Desktop 12.0, you may be responsible for any chargebacks and fees resulting from the fraud. We encourage you to get the new EMV card reader as soon as possible to reduce your EMV-related fraud losses when processing card-present transactions.

If you plan on processing card present transactions in the future, you may consider ordering an EMV card reader to reduce your liability for counterfeit or stolen EMV/chip cards. If you only key in credit card data instead of swiping cards, you will not be affected by the EMV liability shift, but you should always be aware of the ways to prevent fraud when processing online or phone transactions. More information is available in this link.

EMV compliance is not a law and it is up to each business to decide if upgrading to EMV card readers is right for them. Although it is optional, EMV will help protect your business by providing increased fraud protection from counterfeit, lost or stolen cards, because the embedded chip is more secure than the traditional magnetic stripe technology. EMV transactions will take longer than traditional magnetic stripe cards, because the EMV device reads the microchip to help authenticate that the credit card is valid. During that authentication process, the chip card has to be inserted into the device for the entire transaction, which involves back and forth communication.

A mobile wallet is a digital wallet with credit or debit card information stored on a mobile device, such as on an app on your smartphone. Common mobile wallets include Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Each mobile wallet securely stores sensitive card and bank data that is encrypted and ready to be used for mobile payments. Some mobile wallets can also store tickets, boarding passes and other documents. To accept a payment using a mobile wallet, the customer simply needs to bring his or her mobile device close to the mobile card reader or POS.

To accept mobile payments for your business, you will need a mobile credit card reader and its accompanying mobile app or software. QuickBooks offers its chip and magstripe card reader free to new customers. Simply follow the card reader setup instructions to begin accepting mobile payments.

Yes, if you are presented with a chip card and swipe it in any device you would be liable. Best bet is to get a chip card reader. I love the contactless chip reader, you can either connect it to the hub on your Square Stand or pair it wireless with bluetooth.

So assuming we already have the chip readers to replace the old square readers for our phones would those work? Do I need to order the $50 chip and tap to pay readers? I'm not positive what my dad already has so I am trying to figure this all out.

So to clarify... I do have the chip reader for my phone. However, I was at a craft show this past Sat, and lost internet connection for a time period. If that happens again, I see how I can switch to offline mode. In that mode, the chip reader won't work, but I can still swipe the chip card, correct? I understand I can be liable for swiping a chip card, but really don't have an option if there is no internet connection. Do I have all this correct? If I manually enter the card, then I pay a higher transation fee, so it is better to swipe the chip card when in ofline mode.Correct?

Hi, i'm just getting started and saw that the FAQ's say the free reader we are getting does not take chiped cards. Does that mean we have to swipe them like a regular card to accept payment? Or does that mean we shouln't bother with the free reader and just go buy one that accepts both types of cards?

When you sign up for Square, you will receive a free magstripe reader. This device can plug into the headphone jack or lightning connector of your mobile device and allow you to run magstripe credit card transactions in conjunction with the Square POS mobile app.

The Square chip and contactless payment reader pairs with a smart device through Bluetooth to allow you to accept contactless payment methods such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, as well as chip card payments.

Where can I buy a Square card reader? You can find the Square reader at major retail stores, including Target, Meijer, Walmart, and Walgreens. You may also find them at your local cellphone store, including AT&T, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular.

Credit card readers are hardware that accept and process payments along with point-of-sale (POS) software. They can be countertop terminals, mobile devices, or readers that plug into smartphones and tablets. The best debit and credit card readers offer flexible payment options, are affordable and easy to use, and work seamlessly with POS software. 041b061a72
