Original Film Scripts To Buy

We only offer vintage original movie scripts. And, on occasion, we can provide multiple drafts of the same script, which can be wildly different. Movies may be in development for many years, with a variety of different writers and directors attached to them. As a result, one script can be very different in its content from another. We recently handled very divergent scripts from such science-fiction classics as ROBOCOP and TOTAL RECALL. If you are a script collector or curator, it is fascinating to compare the different approaches taken as you read the different drafts.

Scripts can be collected because of the film itself. But there are numerous scripts whose greater interest lies in their being a literary adaptation. Many of the great names of Twentieth Century literature had films adapted from their works: Peal Buck, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, James Joyce, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jim Thompson, to list just a few.

Selling your first original feature screenplay is the dream. But it's easier said than done. Because even if you write the next big hit, you still have to get your script in front of the right people. And that's no easy task, especially if you're trying to sell your first script.

Selling a script takes a lot of hard work, loads of planning, and little luck, but the good news is that people sell scripts every day. Hollywood is hungry for fresh voices and new stories. And while it can be challenging to get traction for your screenplay, there is a market for your script. Here are five essential steps you can take to sell your first screenplay.

Major studios don't usually buy original scripts from unknown writers. Sure, it can happen, but you shouldn't plan on it. The majority of original script sales actually occur directly through production companies. And that's a result of packaging that entails the perfect timing and mixture of distributor, star, producer, and director.

But don't worry, you can make a living writing and selling dramas and comedies to Lifetime, Hallmark, and other specialty channels and streaming services as well. It's not all action. And then there's the indie market to fall back on as well. These markets may not offer the same big studio six and seven-figure paychecks for spec scripts, but it's more than enough to keep you writing. And you can always hold out hope that a big production company, producer, or studio will come calling one day.

Another way to build your list of query targets is to find movies like your script and see which production companies made them. You can also watch similar movies and pay close attention to the few production companies and distributor logos that open the film. Then look those companies up on IMDBPro.

Selling yourself as a writer is a big part of selling your screenplays. Most contracts come from writing assignments, and your original screenplays can work as writing samples to prove that you're worthy of those coveted paid writing gigs.

Go Into the Story is the official blog for The Blacklist, the screenwriting community famous for its annual top ten list of unproduced scripts. One useful feature of Go Into the Story is its bank of downloadable movie scripts.

The titular Drew has been sharing scripts with curious readers and writers for almost two decades now, and has a vast library from which to choose from. A great benefit of Script-O-Rama is that it holds several drafts of certain movies, an invaluable resource for those who want to see how a Hollywood film evolves in the writing process.

The Wachowskis pitched the script to Warner Bros. who were initially skeptical of its philosophical musings and tricky SFX for the time. They then decided to bring on board underground comic book artists Steve Skroce and Geof Darrow to storyboard the entire film, shot-by-shot. Warners were impressed and the rest, as they say, is history.

Three of the best script writers in Hollywood collaborated for this modern classic. Beattie originally had the idea for the movie aged seventeen while riding in the back of a cab in his native Sydney. He then worked up a two-page treatment called The Last Domino, which he turned into a screenplay. Later he was lucky enough to be put in touch with Darabont and then Mann who both contributed revisions.

The origins of this spec screenplay are just as creepy as the film. As Reddick recounts, he was given the idea by a real-life story of a woman whose life was saved by her mom who warned her not to take a flight that wound up crashing. Reddick then wrote the script as an X-Files spec but was advised by a friend to reshape it into a feature.

This script was born purely out of budgetary restrictions as writers Whannell and Wan deliberately wanted to write a horror film as cheaply as possible. One that they could finance themselves. Inspired by low-budget movies such as Pi and The Blair Witch Project, they decided on the concept of two actors, one room, and one dead body. Easily one of the best screenplays to read for horror writers.

If you want to know how to sell your screenplay online, the Blacklist is as good a place as any to start. The site began as a survey in 2005 when Franklin Leonard surveyed around 100 hundred film industry development execs about their favorite scripts from that year that had not been made.

Now screenwriters are able (for a fee) to upload their scripts to their database and monitor the volume of interest it receives from industry executives. As we said, a great starting point in figuring out how to sell a screenplay online. Check out the Blacklist >>

Over 200 films have been made by producers from scripts and writers found on InkTip. In fact, they average 30 films produced each year, in addition to helping countless writers find representation or options on their script.

Tread carefully here, but sometimes selling scripts can be as simple as reply to an ad on a screenwriting bulletin board. You can find some very interesting (and legitimate) ads on sites looking for screenwriters and screenplays.

Selling a movie script is really a mix of sticking with it for the long haul and pure luck. It really depends how much you want it. If this is something you feel born to do, stick with it and the chances are you will succeed. After all, many writers took decades before they finally started selling scripts.

As you probably know, no one really has a definitive answer on how to sell a screenplay. Every professional writer has a different angle on selling scripts and a different story of how they broke in. But the options in this post will hopefully set you off in the right direction.
